In the hidden passageway, Niccolo closed the spy hole and went first to relay the news to Maestro Leonardo, and then to inscribe it in his weekly report to the Contessa.

In the corridor outside the chamber, da Corte and Cossa whispered together as they hurried toward the Rochetta.

“My god,” said Bernardino,” what a mess! Captain Francesco was not without enemies, but he was also not without friends. Let us begin by looking for those who might have had a grievance against him.”

“What constitutes a grievance in this court?” Salvatore asked. He glanced around and lowered his voice until it could barely be heard. “We both know of one person who might want Madonna Valentina's lover murdered, and what better revenge than to force the lady to watch the execution?”

“You refer to Galeazzo?”

Salvatore shook his head. “No! Think!”

Bernardino stopped abruptly. “By the Virgin! You don't mean - ?”

“You have to admit there would be a brilliance behind it. “While everyone is looking for an assassin sent here to kill his Excellency, he takes advantage of the situation to remove a rival.”

“He would kill his own commander of the armies on the very eve of a threatened invasion?!”

“He would – if he has something else in mind.”

“Capitulation?”

“Possibly. Or perhaps he has a new commander ready to replace Galeazz.”

The castellan drew a large linen handkerchief from the cuff of his sleeve and wiped his forehead. “Are you mad?” He looked in all directions and whispered, “We start searching for a man sent to kill the Duke, and now you suggest the intended victim may be a killer himself!”

“It's a possibility, but there's another.”

“What?”

“His Excellency intended to replace Sanseverino with Bicocca.”

The castellan's mouth dropped open. “And now you're suggesting Galeazz knew he was to be replaced and killed Francesco?!”

“It's a possibility.”

“It's absurd! And your first premise is treason! For the love of god, try another tack!”

Salvatore smiled. “Well,” he said, “they're only theories.”
